The Client & The Challenge
The Worly Building, a three-story historic landmark in Columbus’s German Village, is a cultural hub housing popular establishments like Rockmill Tavern and Shadowbox Live. Originally a horse stable, its unique architecture, including a steep-slope mansard roof, is central to its character.
However, the building’s proprietors faced a critical issue: the roofing system was failing. The flat EPDM sections were deteriorating, and the mansard roof had suffered considerable structural damage. This posed a direct threat not only to the building’s historic integrity but also to the active businesses and their patrons below. The challenge was twofold: execute a complex, modern roof replacement while preserving the building’s historical aesthetic and ensuring zero disruption to operations in a bustling downtown environment.
The Able Roof Solution
This project was expertly managed by our specialized commercial division, then known as Contractors Inc., prior to its full reintegration under the Able Roof brand. Our team was selected for its proven expertise in handling complex historic and commercial roofing projects and developed a meticulous plan to address the unique structural and logistical challenges.
Logistical Precision
We began by acquiring all necessary city permits for material transport and crane operations in a high-traffic area, creating a detailed logistics plan to minimize disruption to Front Street businesses and pedestrians.
Structural Renovation & Dual-System Installation
Our process started with the safe, systematic tear-off of the old, damaged roofing materials. We then addressed the underlying structural issues of the mansard roof to ensure a solid foundation for the new system. We installed two distinct roofing systems tailored to the building’s architecture:
- Steep Slope: High-quality architectural shingles were selected to match the historic character of the mansard roof.
- Flat Roof: A durable, modern EPDM rubber roofing system was installed on the flat areas to provide superior, long-term weather protection.

The Worly Building project was completed on time and within budget, successfully blending modern roofing technology with historical preservation.
