The Challenge: Managing Transitions & Improving Ventilation
This residence featured an aging shingle roof that, while not currently leaking, had reached its full life expectancy. The main challenge of this project involved a carport with existing EPDM roofing on the left side and a separate low-slope section at the rear of the home.
Many contractors struggle with these transition points, which are the most common failure spots for leaks. The homeowner needed a solution that modernized the home’s ventilation while ensuring a seamless, watertight bond between the pitched shingles and the flat-roofing sections.
The Able Roofing Solution: Strategic Ventilation & Material Upgrades
Project Consultant Brian Larissey recommended a system that simplified the roof’s profile while significantly increasing its “breathability.”
Advanced Technical Upgrades:
- Ventilation Optimization: We closed 8 outdated individual vents (hat vents) and replaced them with a continuous Ridge Vent system. This provides superior airflow, reducing attic heat in the summer and preventing ice damming in the winter.
- Low-Slope Mastery: On the rear low-slope section, we removed the failing material and installed high-performance Flintlastic® in Moire Black. This was color-matched to the Peppercorn shingles for a cohesive aesthetic.
- Flashing & Drip Edge: To match the deep tones of the Peppercorn shingles, we installed Black Drip Edge and Black Flashing throughout, ensuring a sleek, modern finish.
- Wood Replacement Policy: During the tear-off of the flat roof section, we identified damaged decking. Consistent with our quality promise, the first 3 sheets of OSB wood were provided by Able Roofing at no additional cost to the customer.
The Result: Modernized Performance in 43202
By working around the left-side carport EPDM and replacing the rear low-slope section, our crew transformed a dated, multi-vented roof into a streamlined, high-performance system.
- Clintonville Neighborhood Aesthetics: The Peppercorn color choice adds a premium, high-contrast look that fits perfectly with the architectural styles of the Tibet Rd area.
- Cleanup & Integrity: As with all Able projects, we performed a 100% magnetic sweep of the property, ensuring the carport and surrounding yard were free of debris.
Expert Insight: The Importance of Ridge Vents
“On older homes in Columbus, you often see multiple ‘hat vents’ scattered across the roof. By closing those and moving to a ridge vent, we don’t just make the roof look better—we create a consistent thermal envelope that can extend the life of the shingles by years.” — Brian Larissey, Project Consultant
