Selecting the Perfect Roofing Nails

Many roofing endeavors, such as fastening shingles, require the use of roofing nails, which are available in a variety of materials and sizes and are more durable than standard or traditional nails. The type of shank helps differentiate between the different roofing nails. So which nails will work best for your Columbus roofing system?

If you like it, then you should have put a ring on it!

A barbed shank nail, that is! Thanks to its large head, this type of nail is extremely strong and will protect the Columbus roofing system and home you love so much from Mother Nature. They are especially ideal for homes in areas with strong winds. Barbed shank roofing nails can be made from myriad of substances including galvanized carbon steel, zinc-plated steel, stainless steel, copper, or aluminum. The barbed shank nail is primarily used for asphalt roofing felts.

Able Roofing goes one step further with our very own Trident 3 barbed shank nail. This ultra durable nail has three times the holding power of standard roofing nails. Trident 3 eliminates nail pops, blow-offs, and leaks in your Columbus roofing system, and also includes a lifetime warranty!

How about smooth shank nails for your Columbus roofing system?

While not as strong as ring shank nails, smooth shank nails are a lot less expensive and easier to drive. They can be made from copper, aluminum, stainless steel, or galvanized carbon steel. Smooth shank roofing nails are the standard, cheapest, and most commonly used roofing nails.

You could try screw shank nails for your Columbus roofing system, too!

Screw shank nails feature a twisted shank, flat head, and diamond tip point, all of which make it ideal for securing your Columbus roofing system. They work especially well for wood and pallets; wood or shingles are less likely to split when a roofing nail with a sharper tip is used because there is less stress when it penetrates.

Choosing the right material for your roofing nails.

The material of your Columbus roofing system and location of your home will determine the ideal material of your roofing nails. For instance, aluminum nails are well fitted for metal roofs and shingles. However, they are not recommended for areas where they can be exposed to chemicals or salt, so use stainless steel roofing nails if you live in a coastal area. Stainless steel nails are good for fastening tiles and slate. Galvanized roofing nails, or steel nails coated in zinc, are perfect for asphalt shingles, and they hold up well against rust. Aluminum nails should be used for surfaces made out of metal and siding. If you have a traditional Columbus roofing surface, then you may want to use roofing nails made from copper.

Size Matters!

Size is another important type of classification for roofing nails. The length of the nail is the shank. They are available at lengths up to 6 inches (15 centimeters), but standard lengths are between 1 and 2 inches (2 and 5 centimeters). The shank length you need depends on the material of your Columbus roofing system. Be sure to use 1-inch (2.5 centimeters) nails for asphalt or fiberglass shingles; you’ll need longer nails for wood shingles, which are thicker.

Once you’ve taken into consideration the many different types, materials, and sizes of roofing nails, you can decide which will work best for your Columbus roofing system and nail your next project on the head!
