For a typical homeowner, what is the most common masonry problem?

Without a doubt, the most common problem has to do with the top portion of the chimney, known as the crown. Have no fear though; we can help!

What exactly is the chimney crown?

The chimney crown is the part of your chimney that protects and holds together the top portion. It is the flat part covered with cement. It is also common for your crown to be sloped in order to help shed water.

What makes the crown so important?

Your crown will keep water from entering the chimney cavity – and from raining down into your home! If water were to enter into the chimney cavity—usually through damaged or cracked crowns—it would damage not only your chimney, but also your entire home!

What type of damage can result from a cracked crown?

If water were to enter the chimney during weather above freezing, it would eventually break down the mortar and cause extensive chimney damage. In the wintertime, the freeze-thaw effect can actually crack your chimney. Once water seeps into the chimney cavity, it will eventually find its way into your home and contribute more damage – and result in you needing costly repairs.

Is it possible to just add more cement to a cracked crown?

Would you add more cement over a cracked sidewalk?” open=”false” style=”default” color=”Default” size=”md”] Eventually, the crack will reappear and it will be worse than it was before. If you need an expert masonry contractor, you can call Able Roofing. We often use a special flexible crown compound that does not crack.

What do the masonry experts at Able Roofing use to repair cracked crowns?

We traditionally use Crown Seal – a product that was developed specifically for crown repair. Crown Seal is a great product because it prevents the crown from cracking again, particularly due to its indefinite flexibility.

What causes chimney crowns to crack?

It’s simple: cement is not flexible. This means that expansion and contraction of masonry is a common reason for cracking. In addition to that, small cracks will often develop and become large cracks over time.

What makes a chimney considered a masonry chimney?

Any chimney made of masonry materials, such as brick, stucco, stone, or block, is considered a masonry chimney. The distinguishing factor: masonry is very porous and needs to be waterproofed.

Why should chimneys be waterproofed?

Since masonry is so porous, water can leach onto the masonry and break down the mortar that holds together the chimney. Since your chimney takes weather abuse from all four sides, it is prone to problems – but these problems can be lessened by waterproofing. At Able Roofing, one application of our waterproofing can typically last for 10 years.

Is waterproofing made of silicone?

Absolutely not. All that silicone does is coat the chimney – in some cases it can do more harm than good. Our waterproofing is siloxane. This material penetrates deep into the masonry – which allows for it to breathe while still protecting against water infiltration.

Will waterproofing alter the aesthetics of my chimney?

Definitely not. Our waterproofing is clear and will not change the look of your chimney at all.

How long does a crown repair usually take?

Generally, a crown repair only takes a few hours. However, the time varies depending on the size of the chimney.

How will I know if I need a crown repair?

You can call Able Roofing to schedule an appointment. As expert masonry contractors, we will come to your home to conduct a free inspection. We can photograph the damage and explain the steps necessary to correct the situation. Remember, a little bit of maintenance goes a long way in saving you money in the future!

Can you explain what a chimney reline is?

A chimney reline is the process of installing stainless steel (or any other type of alloy piping) inside the masonry cavity. This may become necessary when existing clay flue liners become damaged or when appliances, such as high efficiency furnaces or wood burning stoves, are used with your chimney.

My roof leaks around my chimney. What is to blame: the roof or the chimney?

It can be difficult to determine the cause of a leak without a thorough inspection. Since Able Roofing handles both roofing and chimney repair services, our masons can determine the cause for you. As an expert masonry contractor, our professional masonry team is trained to uncover the cause of a leak. And all of our inspections are free of charge!
